Can snakes fight fires? One kind of snake can. It lives in the Amazon jungle in Brazil and is about 4 meters long. When the snake sees a fire, it will rush there and put the fire out by shaking its head and body heavily. Because it produces a liquid over its body, it isn’t hurt by the fire and can stay in it for a long time.
In the forests (森林) of Latin America lives a kind of magic bird. The bird is black all over, with a thin neck and a big belly (腹部). The belly is so big that it looks like a bottle. The “bottle” is full of a special liquid. The liquid can stop a fire. When the birds see a fire, they quickly fly over in groups and drop the liquid out of their “bottles” until the fire is out.

Something interesting happened in a football match in Spain last week. During the game, the people watching started to wave (挥动) white handkerchiefs in the air.
You may ask, “What is a handkerchief?” Handkerchiefs are pieces of cloth that people carry in their pockets. They are like tissues (纸巾) but are not made of paper. Handkerchiefs, or hankies, were very popular for hundreds of years. Today, more people use tissues because they are cheap and can be thrown away when they are dirty. However, people do not throw handkerchiefs away — they wash them.
Richard Ⅱ (1367 ~ 1400), King of England, used a hankie one day to wipe his nose when he had a cold. Because he was the king, people started to copy him. Soon everyone was using a hankie to blow their nose (擤鼻涕) or wipe their face when they were hot. Day by day, hankies became something that people wore to show they were rich. Hankies became bigger and more colorful — and that was it!
So, why were the football fans in Spain waving white hankies? It was because in Spain, if you wave a white hankie, it means you’re very happy or very unhappy about something. One player in the football match played so well, so the fans of both teams waved their hankies to show him that they liked him very much.

Dear Aunt Sylvia,
I’m back from my trip to Spain. I know you lived in Las Palmas for many years and that you always love hearing the news from people who have visited Spain.
I was very busy working in Barcelona, but I did have some time to have fun and go sightseeing. Although it was in winter, it was quite warm and dry. It wasn’t humid (湿润的) like Hong Kong — that’s for sure! I stayed in the Old Town, in a small hotel near La Rambla. I visited the Santa Caterina food market every day for lunch, just like we did when we visited Barcelona together. I had time to go back and look at all the beautiful buildings designed by Gaudi, including the Sagrada Familia church.
They say that the church will be finally finished in 2026, which will be exactly 100 years since Gaudi died! Perhaps we could go back and visit it again, 25 years after we last went.
I got to visit some of the museums, but the highlight of the trip was a visit to the Camp Nou to watch FC Barcelona play football. There were over 90,000 people there. Please don’t tell Uncle Harold. I don’t want him to be too jealous (妒羡的)!
It was great being back there again.
Give my love to Uncle Harold and I’ll write soon.
Yours,
Charles

Katherine Commale is an 11-year-old student from Pennsylvania. At the age of five, she learned that malaria (疟疾) killed a child in Africa every 30 seconds. She also learned that people wouldn’t get that disease if they slept in a bed net (蚊帐). The cost of a bed net was about 10 dollars.
“I was really sad to learn that many children died of the disease. I decided to do something to help them,” says Katherine.
5-year-old Katherine began to make presentations at churches and schools. She showed people how important bed nets are to African families. After people saw the presentations, many of them donated money.
Before Katherine was six years old, she had raised over $10,000. She sent the money to Nothing But Nets (NBN), which is a global, grassroots campaign to raise money to fight malaria. NBN has sent over 4 million nets to more than 20 countries. Soon after, Katherine had another idea. She made gift certificates (礼券) to sell for the Christmas holiday. On each 10-dollar certificate, there was a message. It explained that a bed net would be sent to Africa.
Katherine has helped to raise more than $200,000 for NBN. “It makes me happy to think about helping children,” says Katherine, “but I won’t stop working until everyone in Africa has a bed net.”

The relationship between children and parents
Parents are the first people we get on with when we were born to the world. They are our first teachers. They teach us how to speak and walk. They give us all their love. At times our parents can’t understand us very well. Sometimes they are very strict with children in something. So some children even argue with their parents.
In my opinion, if our parents regard us as their friends, it will be better. And as children, we should be polite and helpful to our parents.
