Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.

Woolworth realized he could attract people’s interest when he sold goods(商品),but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品 ) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.

Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities(量) from the factories. Once, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order (订单) for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep working 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.

By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous in the world. He always runs(经营) his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”

For many years , Hawaii has been a magic name to people who like to travel. People on both sides of the Pacific Ocean(太平洋), in Japan and in America, dream of seeing these beautiful islands in the middle of ocean. They dream to see the sunset over the ocean. In the tropical (热带的)lands, the sun drops like a ball of golden fire into the sea. And it drops so quickly that you can almost see it move. The sun leaves behind a glow(绚丽光芒)) that lights the skies in the quiet water.

People often have a quiet, relaxing time, walking along the water. This scene is not too different from the beauty that greeted the first strangers to these islands hundreds years ago. They were Polynesia people who came from Tahiti in canoes that much bigger than small boats.

They found the beautiful white sand beaches and the waving palm trees(摇曳的棕榈树), but there were no big hotels like the ones we see nowadays . The first people came to Hawaii nearly two thousand years ago, but tall hotels were only built in the last 30 years. Now jet airplanes make it possible to fly to Hawaii for a weekend from Tokyo or San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Wherever people come from, they really want to see the original(原始的) beauty of Hawaii. They want to see the lovely beaches and the mountains called Diamond Head which is almost hidden by the tall hotels.

Your peers are people your age or close to it. Besides(除……外) close friends, your peers include other children you know who are the same age------like people in your grade, sports team, or neighborhood. Peers may have a positive influence on each other and play an important part in each other’s life.

Peers set plenty of good examples(树立榜样) for each other. Having peers who do well in school or do their best in a sport can influence you to work hard to realize your dream, too. Peers who are kind and friendly can influence you to be kind and friendly in yourself. Even peers you’ve never met can be good models. For example, watching someone as your age compete in the Olympics or give a piano concert might encourage you to go after a dream of your own.

Your peers listen and give you their opinions as you try out new ideas. They can help you make decisions, too: what courses to take, whether to get your hair cut or let it grow, or how to solve a problem. Peers often give each other good advice. Your peers will be quick to tell you when they think you’re making a mistake or doing something dangerous.

Your peers might get you join in clubs, sports, or volunteer groups. Your world would be less rich without peers encouraging you to try some new food for the first time, or listen to a CD you have never heard before.

D. Your peers may encourage you to try new things.

49.The writer thinks that good examples can influence you to .

① work hard to realize your dream ② do something dangerous
