--- Welcome back, everyone! Now, because it’s a new term, I'm going to give you some advice. Why don't you write it down? Ready?
--- Yes, Ms James.
--- You should always speak English in class. And you should write down your mistake in your notebooks. And why don't you write down the correct spelling and grammar next to the mistakes? What else?
--- It's a good idea to check your vocabulary notebook every day.
--- That's a good idea. Thanks a lot, Lingling.
2(P4---86)
Here’s advice about how to remember vocabulary. Oliver, from Anhui Province wrote, “I want to remember all the new words. I write them down, but I forget them quickly. What should I do?”
Try to remember eight or ten words a day. Write them on pieces of paper and place them in your bedroom. Say the words when you see them, and change them every day. And when you’re shopping how about counting the English words, or saying the English names for everything you see?
3(P10---94)
--- Lingling! Have you ever wanted to travel around the world?
--- Yes, I have. I've always wanted to go to the USA and Europe. And Sally has invited me to stay with her in England one day. The problem is the price of the ticket.
--- Well, guess what! Have you looked at today’s newspaper? There's a competition. “Take off from Beijing Capital Airport and land in London.
Write about a wonderful experience. The first prize is the holiday of your dreams in England.” What do you reckon? Have you ever entered a competition?
--- No, I haven't! It sounds brilliant!
4(P18---90)
--- Hi, Tony. What are you up to?
--- Hi Daming, I've just made this model of the space station. What do you think?
--- It's great. Is this for your space travel homework? I haven't started it yet.
--- Don't panic! Have you heard the latest news? Some scientists have sent a spacecraft to Mars.
--- Have the astronauts discovered life on Mars?
--- No, not yet.
--- But astronauts have already been to the moon.
--- Yes, but no one has been recently. But lots of astronauts have worked on the space station. They take the space

The Earth is a planet and it goes around the Sun. Seven other planets also go around the Sun. None of them has an environment with air, so people and things cannot grow. The Sun and its planets are called the solar system. The solar system is a small part of our galaxy.
The stars we see at night are the suns in other solar systems. There are more than 200 billion stars in our galaxy, called the Milky Way, and our Sun is only one of them.

--- When does Sally arrive in Beijing?
--- Next month.
--- And how long have you known her?
--- For two years.
--- But have you ever met her?
--- No, I haven't. But I get on well with her. We like the same things.
--- Does she speak Chinese?
--- Yes, a little. She's studied it for a year. She says it's very difficult.
--- Yes, it is! It's easier to learn a foreign language when you visit the country.
--- How long have you lived here?
--- Since 2004.
--- And how long have you studied Chinese?
--- For a year.

Li Yinming and Liu Sanzi can’t get an education because their families are poor. Now they can go to school with the help of Project Hope. In the last 15 years, this project has raised money and paid for the education of 2.5 million poor students in the countryside.
People in China and abroad have given two point two billion Yuan.
With this money, Project Hope has built many schools and libraries.
It has also trained teachers and it has sent students to high schools.

--- I like this music! Who’s it by?
--- Well, I’m not sure, but Sally’s school orchestra is playing it.
--- It’s by Strauss. You’ve heard of him, haven’t you?
--- Yes, I have. He was German, wasn’t he?
--- No, he wasn’t. He was Austrian. He was born in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
--- What’s it called?
--- The Blue Danube. The Danube is the river in Vienna.
--- You like western classical music, don’t you?
--- Yes, I do.
--- Who’s your favourite classical composer?
--- Beethoven. But I also like pop music. You listen to pop music, don’t you?
--- Yes, I love it!
9(P36---77)
Mozart was born in Austria in 1756. Before he was six he played not only the piano, but also the violin and the organ. His family took him around Europe and he gave concerts in many cities. He wrote his first opera at the age of 12 and hundreds of beautiful pieces of music for the classical orchestra. But he died in 1791 when he was only 35. Some people say he was the greatest European composer.

--- That smells delicious! What are you making?
--- Hi, guys! I’ve made a pizza. Have some!
--- OK. Yes, it’s great.
--- What’s the matter, Daming?
--- It tastes too strong. I'm afraid I don't like cheese. It doesn’t smell fresh. No, thanks.
--- Well, I've made some chocolate cookies. Have a try! They taste really sweet.
--- That’s much better.
--- You’re wearing a lovely sweater, Lingling.
--- Yes, it feels very soft and comfortable.
--- You both look very smart. And so much food! Are we having a party?
--- We’re going to the airport to meet my friend Sally from London.
11(P58---94)
Hi Lingling,
Thanks for your last message, it was great to hear from you.
I hope you will recognise me from my photo when I arrive at the airport.
I’m quite tall, with short fair hair, and I wear glasses. I’ve got your photo — you look so pretty, so I’m sure we’ll find each other!
Thanks for telling me about what you like doing. You sound just like me! I spend a lot of time with the school orchestra, but I also like dance music.
Welcome to China! See you next week!
Love sally

--- So show me your map of Beijing, Lingling.
--- OK, here’s Tian’anmen Square. On the left, over there, is the Great Hall of the People. And on the right is the National Museum of China.
--- And how do I get to the Forbidden City?
--- Go straight ahead. It's opposite Tian’anmen Square.
--- I see. And where is the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall?
--- It’s here, between the Great Hall of the People and the Museum.
--- And what park is your favourite?
--- Beihai Park. It’s kind of quiet.
13(P74---89)
The Panda is one of the animals most in danger. Scientists are studying how they live and more baby pandas are born in the zoos.
Pandas live in the forests and mountains of Southwest China. They mainly live on bamboo, and each panda needs to eat a lot of bamboo every day.
The area of bamboo is becoming smaller for many different reasons, so pandas have less and less land to live on. Pandas don’t have many babies, and baby pandas often die. The situation is becoming very serious.
14(P80--- 96)
--- Sally and I went to Lao She Teahouse last night.
--- How was it?
--- It was great! As you know, Sally’s main interest is music, and she wanted to see some Beijing Opera. So my parents offered to take us there. You can drink tea and see some opera.
--- Do you like Beijing Opera?
--- Not especially, but I wanted to see the teahouse, so my parents agreed to take us.
--- And did you understand it, Sally?
--- I tried to understand it, but it was almost impossible.
--- Betty, who is Lao She?
--- No idea.
--- Lao She was a famous writer.
15(P82--- 91)
Lao She wrote Teahouse in 1957. The play shows the audience life in China between 1898 and 1945. It takes place in a teahouse in old Beijing and it tells us the story of Wang Lifa and his customers.
In Lao She Teahouse today, waiters bring tea to the customers and sell them delicious Chinese food. If you like Beijing Opera, folk music, acrobatics or magic shows, you can enjoy them in the teahouse. Lao She Teahouse gives a wonderful welcome to everyone from China and from all over the world.
16(P88---100)
--- Hey, you lot! Don’t forget Lingling’s birthday next week.
--- Yes, we’re going shopping for her present.
--- It’s freezing, isn’t it?
--- Yes, it’s really cold.
--- What are you doing for Spring Festival, Tony?
--- We’re going to England.
--- Will it be snowy?
--- You must be joking! It may not even be cold, just wet. And it might be windy. Are you going to the USA, Betty?
--- We’re not sure. We might go to Australia.
--- Sounds great! What will the weather be like?
--- Not bad, I guess. At the moment, it’s summer there, so it’ll probably be hot and sunny. And what about you?
17(P90---90)
The USA is a very big country to visit, so choose carefully the places to see and the time to go.
New York and Washington D.C. are good places to visit in May or October. It’s not too hot then. In winter there’s a lot of snow.
The best plan is to arrive in New England in September. The weather starts to get cooler and the trees start to change colour. It’s a good idea to bring your camera because you may want to take photos of the autumn leaves.
18(P96---85)
--- Stop chatting, everyone. Here she comes! Happy birthday, Lingling.
--- Oh, you remembered!
--- We've got you a present.
--- Oh, thank you.
--- You can open it! Get a move on!
--- Oh no! I mustn't open it now. Later!
--- Hang on! In the USA, when someone gives you a present, you must open it immediately.
--- No, in China you must wait and open it later.
--- And remember: When you accept a present, you must use both hands.
--- Both hands! In Britain we can use one hand!
--- That’s right.
19(P98---90)
When I went to England, I noticed many different traditions.
For example, I went to a wedding. It was very different from a Chinese wedding. The man and the woman can't see each other the night before the wedding. Then the woman mustn't arrive at the church on time but a few minutes late. And at the party after the wedding, the woman throws her flowers over her shoulder. The girl who catches them will be next to get married! It was all very strange but it was great fun!
